The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has urged Nigerians not to panic over reports of a possible electricity tariff increase, insisting that the Federal Government has no plan to raise tariffs. Speaking in Ibadan, Oyo State, he said the government’s priority is to improve electricity supply and work towards providing power around the clock.
Tegbe made the statement during the groundbreaking ceremony for five mini-grid projects designed to serve communities across Akinyele, Ido, Ibadan North, Egbeda and Lagelu local government areas. The projects have a combined capacity of 17.7 megawatts and will include battery storage systems with a capacity of 17.74 megawatt-hours. The beneficiary communities are Bola, Jiboye, Molade-Adelubi, Ogo Oluwa and Sooko-Elega.
The minister said the projects would improve electricity access, reduce reliance on petrol and diesel generators, and support businesses and job creation. He added that the government was also working to strengthen the national grid and improve power generation and transmission across several corridors, including Lagos-Ogun, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, and Benin-Enugu-Port Harcourt. He commended the Rural Electrification Agency, project partners and the Oyo State Government for supporting the initiative.
