Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said he would exercise full control over his administration if elected president in 2027. Speaking in an interview with the BBC, the former Anambra State governor criticised the late President Muhammadu Buhari’s handling of government, saying Buhari was not fully in charge of his administration.

Obi also addressed corruption in the fuel subsidy system, arguing that corruption, rather than the subsidy itself, was the major problem. He said his administration would seek to eliminate corruption within the system and restore the subsidy if elected, while suggesting that reducing opportunities for those involved in corrupt practices would significantly cut the cost of the programme.

The NDC candidate reiterated that bringing back the fuel subsidy would form part of his approach to addressing the issue if he wins the 2027 election. He maintained that the priority would be to remove the corruption associated with the subsidy regime rather than simply abandon the policy.
