Former senator and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Ogun Central Senatorial District, Iyabo Obasanjo, has alleged that political opponents influenced the exclusion of the party’s governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, from INEC’s final list. Speaking on The Arena podcast in Abeokuta, she questioned why Adebutu’s name was missing despite his alleged compliance with the same requirements as other PDP candidates.
Iyabo Obasanjo described the development as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy, warning that allowing powerful politicians to influence candidate lists could undermine fair elections. She expressed confidence that Adebutu’s name would eventually be restored and maintained that the issue went beyond the PDP, stressing that democratic rules must be respected regardless of political interests.
The former lawmaker also predicted a strong showing for the PDP in Ogun State, saying supporters remained committed to the party. Reflecting on her brief membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), she said she had no regrets about joining in good faith but criticised the party’s candidate-selection process, arguing that genuine consensus must take the interests of all aspirants into account.
