The Federal Government has announced a 30-day discount on petrol sold at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) filling stations. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, said the arrangement would allow Nigerians to buy petrol at cost, with priority given to public transport operators.
Oyedele explained that the arrangement is not a subsidy, adding that the government will negotiate the landing cost of petrol and review it monthly. He said the discount is part of a government decision to sell petrol at cost for the specified period.
Meanwhile, the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has urged the Federal Government to increase workers’ salaries without waiting for another review of the national minimum wage. TUC President Festus Osifo said the minimum wage should represent the lowest legal pay for workers rather than the highest amount employees can earn, arguing that the government can improve federal workers’ earnings without a new Minimum Wage Act.
