Nigeria has recorded a major development in specialist healthcare after a surgical team performed a remote robotic operation on a patient in Abuja while the surgeon controlled the robotic instruments from Ogun State. The procedure took place on September 19, 2026, through a collaboration involving Nisa Premier Hospital, Redeemer’s Health Village and RoboMed Global.
Professor Obi Davies-Ekwenna controlled the robotic system from Ogun State during a roughly three-hour operation to remove a kidney affected by a cancerous tumour. According to Redeemer’s Health Village CEO, Dr Adedamola Dada, a medical team remained beside the patient in Abuja to provide anaesthesia, monitoring and other essential care. Starlink provided the primary internet connection, with MTN serving as backup.
Dada said the patient recovered well and left the hospital within approximately 24 hours. He believes tele-robotic surgery could help more Nigerians access specialist treatment locally and reduce the need to travel abroad. However, he noted that wider adoption will depend on reliable connectivity, emergency safeguards, trained personnel, regulation and affordable treatment costs. Redeemer’s Health Village also plans to train more Nigerian specialists through a Robotic Academy.
