Nigerian-born American rapper Ms Jorji has alleged that her father sexually abused her between the ages of 11 and 18, claiming that her family focused on protecting his reputation instead of addressing her experience.
Speaking on the Honest Bunch podcast, the rapper described sexual abuse as a serious concern in Nigeria, noting that victims may struggle to speak out when pressured to protect relatives or preserve family image. She also recounted a female friend’s alleged sexual assault in Nigeria, claiming she spent about ₦1 million trying to get the police to investigate, but the case remained unresolved after the suspect reportedly fled.
Ms Jorji challenged the belief that family loyalty should be determined by blood ties, arguing that genuine family consists of people who care about one’s wellbeing. Her account has renewed attention on the difficulties survivors can face when seeking support and accountability, particularly when allegations involve family members or people they know.
