The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has urged edible oil and salt producers to maintain quality standards and ensure their products meet applicable requirements. The commission said a survey with the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) found that some vegetable oil and salt samples in Nigerian markets were inadequately fortified.

The study analysed 200 samples, including 100 vegetable oil and 100 salt samples, collected from households and markets across northern and southern Nigeria. It found that 12 per cent of the vegetable oil and two per cent of the salt samples were inadequately fortified, while only six vegetable oil producers had registered on the digital traceability platform.

FCCPC Executive Vice Chairman Tunji Bello said consumers should be able to trust the quality and benefits of products they purchase. The commission said it had directed defaulting producers to comply and escalated the matter to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for further action.
