FIFA president Gianni Infantino has paid tribute to Lionel Messi after the Argentina captain made his final international appearance. Messi ended his Argentina career with a 3-0 friendly victory over Benin, scoring once and providing two assists in his farewell match.
Infantino praised Messi for the memories he created for Argentina supporters and football fans around the world. Messi finishes his international career as Argentina’s most-capped player with 208 appearances and leaves with major honours including the 2022 FIFA World Cup and Copa America titles.
Messi made his Argentina debut in 2005 and became the country’s leading goalscorer after years of international disappointment before eventually winning major trophies. With his international career now over, the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward will turn his attention to his club commitments with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
