The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been accused of creating 453 additional polling units ahead of the 2027 general elections without publicly announcing the exercise or consulting key electoral stakeholders.

According to a report by SaharaReporters, the alleged additions increased Nigeria’s total polling units from 176,846 to 177,299, with Delta State recording an increase from 5,863 to 6,316. An INEC source reportedly claimed that some senior officials were unaware of the development and called on the commission to explain when and where the new units were created.

The source demanded that The Independent National Electoral Commission ( publish the locations, identification codes, wards and local government areas of the 453 alleged polling units, as well as details of the officials who approved them. The allegations come amid concerns over suspicious photographs on the preliminary voters’ register, which INEC says it is investigating. The commission had yet to respond to the latest allegations as of the time of filing this report.
