The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused politicians of deceiving Nigerians through campaign strategies designed to portray them as humble and connected to ordinary citizens. He made the remarks on Thursday during his induction into the Idoma Hall of Fame in Abuja.

Wike criticised politicians who buy corn and groundnuts from roadside vendors, purchase fuel at filling stations or celebrate birthdays at camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) to gain public sympathy. He questioned why some politicians adopt these practices during their presidential campaigns when they had not done so while holding public office.

The FCT minister argued that such actions should not automatically be interpreted as signs of humility or concern for ordinary Nigerians. He also questioned the need for politicians to visit filling stations to demonstrate awareness of fuel prices, insisting that leaders should already understand the challenges citizens face.
