The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has approached the Federal High Court in Abuja over the alleged defection of 45 lawmakers who won their seats on the party’s platform in the 2023 elections.
The suit involves members of the Kano State House of Assembly, House of Representatives and Senate. The party is challenging their continued occupation of legislative seats after allegedly leaving The New Nigeria Peoples Party ( without following the required resignation procedures.
The NNPP also questioned their nominations for the 2027 elections under other political parties. Its founder, Dr Boniface Aniebonam, warned against backdating resignation letters, insisting that the party would not accept attempts to regularise the alleged defections retrospectively.
