Segun Showunmi, a member of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council’s media team, has argued that physical fitness should not be the main consideration when assessing a presidential candidate. He made the remarks while reacting to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s challenge for presidential candidates to demonstrate their physical energy ahead of the 2027 election.

Speaking on TVC News’ Beyond The Headlines, Showunmi said the presidency requires intellectual ability, strategic thinking and clear policy direction rather than physical strength. He argued that a president’s primary responsibility is to develop policies, make decisions and establish a clear vision for the country, while the institution has the necessary personnel to handle demanding physical tasks.

Makinde had issued the fitness challenge during the APM presidential campaign event in Akure, Ondo State, saying Nigeria needs a leader capable of enduring the demands of the office. However, Showunmi maintained that physical limitations should not automatically disqualify anyone from leadership, citing examples of leaders with disabilities who have successfully occupied positions of authority.

  1. Mr Showunmi I have a question for you….How can a president develop policies, make decisions and establish a clear vision for the country when he is not healthy? Health is first sir so stop defending what is undefendable sir
