The Presidency has criticised former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi over his claim that only people who are mentally unstable would vote for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. Presidential aide Temitope Ajayi described Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, as a political liability to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s ticket.

Amaechi made the controversial remarks on Thursday at an ADC town hall meeting in Benin City, Edo State, where he urged residents to reject the Presidency in the next election. He argued that Nigerians supporting the President’s re-election should be questioned over their judgment, using strong language to criticise those intending to vote for Tinubu.

Responding in an interview with Punch, Ajayi accused Amaechi of making irresponsible statements and questioned his electoral influence, particularly in Rivers State and the South-South region. He also argued that Amaechi would add little value to Atiku’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 election.
