The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has said the commission’s workers are the least paid in Nigeria. He made the statement on Tuesday during a press conference and national stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, where he outlined measures being considered to improve staff welfare.
Amupitan said INEC had taken steps to prioritise the welfare of its employees, arguing that staff expected to carry out important electoral responsibilities should receive what he described as a living wage. He disclosed that the commission had moved away from the civil service payment structure as part of efforts to establish a separate salary structure for its workers.
According to the INEC chairman, the change is part of broader efforts to address gaps within the commission and improve the electoral system. He said the commission had identified several areas requiring attention and believed addressing them could help resolve some of the challenges affecting the electoral process.
