Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman registered the 50th assist of his senior club career as Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 with VfB Stuttgart in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. Coming on at half-time, the Nigerian winger set up Julian Alvarez’s equaliser just 80 seconds into the second half after Stuttgart had taken the lead through Jamie Leweling in the 36th minute.
Lookman said Stuttgart started strongly but praised Atletico’s response after the break. The Spanish side’s bid for a comeback victory became more difficult when Morten Hjulmand was sent off in the 64th minute for a challenge on Angelo Stiller. Despite being reduced to 10 players, Atletico defended resolutely to secure a point away from home.
The Nigerian also praised Alvarez’s finishing, saying he expected the Argentine to score from the opportunity. In another Champions League development, Nigerian teenager Mubarak Suleiman started for Slavia Prague in their 2-2 draw against Fenerbahce. According to Opta Joe, Suleiman became the first Nigerian teenager to start a Champions League match since Alex Iwobi featured for Arsenal against Barcelona in March 2016.
