Nollywood actress Ruth Kadiri has advised young couples to avoid spending excessively on wedding ceremonies, warning that elaborate celebrations can place unnecessary pressure on marriages. In a video shared on Instagram, the mother of two said the financial and mental demands associated with big weddings could make some people anxious about married life.
Ruth Kadiri explained that some couples enjoy dating and spending time together but become fearful of marriage when they begin considering the responsibilities and expectations surrounding the ceremony. She encouraged intending couples to prioritise their relationship rather than feel compelled to organise engagement ceremonies, traditional weddings and white weddings to satisfy societal expectations.
Sharing her personal experience, the actress said she believes avoiding excessive wedding pressure has contributed to her marital success. She urged young Nigerians to embrace simpler ceremonies, suggesting that couples could pay the bride price, complete their court marriage and celebrate with a small gathering instead of spending beyond their means. She also called for changes to societal and parental expectations placed on young people.
