The Ogun State Government has suspended the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, over allegations that he engaged in partisan political activities. The decision, approved by the State Executive Council, was communicated in a letter dated October 20, 2026, signed by Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Ganiyu Hamzat.
According to the government, the suspension follows complaints about the monarch’s alleged involvement in political activities supporting partisan interests. The state cited Section 52(1) of the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law, 2021, stating that partisan politics is prohibited under the laws governing traditional institutions. The allegations remain subject to investigation.
During the suspension, Oba Akinyemi has been directed to vacate the palace and stay away from its premises. He is also prohibited from using his crown, beaded staff and other traditional symbols of office, and must attend any government meeting convened to investigate the matter. Copies of the suspension letter were sent to the Yewa North Local Government secretary and the Ogun State Commissioner of Police.
