Veteran Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh, widely known as Osuofia, has denied saying Yoruba people founded Nollywood, explaining that his earlier comments were misunderstood.

Speaking on Curiosity Made Me Ask, Owoh said he was referring to the beginnings of Nigeria’s home video industry, not Nollywood itself. He explained that the name Nollywood was adopted later, after filmmakers met and agreed on the name.

Owoh credited Yoruba filmmakers with pioneering the home video tradition, mentioning veteran filmmaker Hubert Ogunde as an important figure in its development. However, he maintained that starting home video was different from founding Nollywood.
