Nigeria has secured a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council after receiving 172 votes out of 181 in an election. The development marks another step in the country’s participation in international efforts to promote and protect human rights. The council addresses global human rights concerns, examines alleged violations and encourages cooperation among member states.
Following the election, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the country’s emergence as a council member. Nigeria’s election comes with expectations that it will participate in discussions and initiatives aimed at addressing human rights issues around the world.
Separately, President Tinubu praised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its work in prosecuting financial crimes, securing convictions and recovering stolen assets. Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the EFCC and National Judicial Institute workshop for judges and justices in Abuja on October 13, 2026, Tinubu commended the commission’s response to cryptocurrency fraud and other technology-driven crimes. He also urged anti-corruption agencies and the judiciary to strengthen cooperation and ensure recovered assets are properly managed.
