Former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner Mike Igini has warned that Nigeria’s 2027 general election will be a major test of the country’s democracy. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, he said INEC, its officials, the judiciary and politicians would all face public scrutiny over their roles in the electoral process.

Mike Igini criticized the state of law enforcement in Nigeria, alleging that many people currently holding public office should be in prison. He also expressed concern over alleged violations of Section 97 of the Electoral Act, which he said protects candidates from being compelled to support political parties.

The former electoral commissioner further alleged that politicians had infiltrated National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) lists by inserting fake corps members to manipulate elections through ad hoc staffing. He argued that Nigeria must address its political problems to achieve meaningful economic development.
