Lionel Messi has revealed that his father strongly encouraged him to attend the ceremony for the 2026 Princesa de Asturias Award for Sport, despite the demands of his football schedule. The Inter Miami forward said his father was particularly excited about the recognition and insisted that he travel to receive the honour.
According to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who shared Messi’s comments on X on Friday, the Argentine star said the award meant more to him than his achievements on the pitch. Messi explained that his father was delighted by the recognition and that he believed he was also enjoying the special moment.
The Princesa de Asturias Awards recognise outstanding achievements across several fields, including sport, science, the arts and international cooperation. He s latest honour adds to a decorated career that includes multiple Ballon d’Or titles, the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina and major successes with Barcelona before his move to Inter Miami.
