Teenagers may understand that drinking, drug use, speeding or dangerous stunts can be harmful, yet still choose to take the risk. Research suggests that excitement, rewards, social situations and the desire to impress or belong can strongly influence their decisions, especially when friends are present.

For parents, the message is to look beyond simply warning teenagers about what could go wrong. Parents can ask what makes the activity appealing, discuss how their teenager might handle pressure from friends and practice realistic ways to say no when necessary.

The article also encourages parents to make safety arrangements clear before teenagers go out. Knowing where they are, who they are with and how they will get home can help, while keeping communication open allows teenagers to talk honestly about difficult situations they encounter.
