Best Time for Sex and Pregnancy: What Couples Should Know

For couples trying to conceive, the timing of intercourse within the menstrual cycle matters more than a particular time of day. The fertile window generally includes the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation, because sperm can survive for several days while the egg remains available for fertilisation for only about 12–24 hours after ovulation.

Ovulation occurs when a mature egg is released from the ovary, creating the main opportunity for fertilisation if sperm are already present in the reproductive tract. The highest chances of conception are generally around the days leading up to ovulation and the day it occurs, although the exact timing can vary from one woman to another and from cycle to cycle.

Couples can estimate their fertile window by tracking menstrual cycles, with the first day of bleeding counted as Day 1 and the cycle ending the day before the next period begins. While some reports suggest that morning or afternoon sex may have benefits based on hormone levels and daily energy patterns, there is no established universal “best” time of day for sexual intercourse; for conception, identifying the fertile window is more important.
