A mosque committee in Bauchi State has removed Imam Dahiru Abubakar from his position following complaints that he repeatedly promoted President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid during religious gatherings. Reports said the imam served at a mosque in Madina Quarters, Bauchi metropolis, where he allegedly urged worshippers to support Tinubu for another term in 2027.
Abubakar confirmed that he had appealed to worshippers not to blame Tinubu for Nigeria’s insecurity and economic difficulties, arguing that prayers and divine intervention were necessary to address the challenges. He also pointed to insecurity in other African countries as part of his argument. However, mosque committee chairman Imam Abubakar Jibrin said the decision followed broader concerns, including alleged political discussions around the mosque and repeated warnings against using the place of worship for political activities.
Jibrin also said the committee rejected a proposal to rename the community mosque, Masjid Abdullahi Bin Zubbair, after Tinubu. He maintained that the mosque should remain a place of worship rather than a platform for political campaigning and disclosed that the committee had decided against reinstating Abubakar. The chairman stressed that the committee was not supporting or opposing any presidential candidate.
