The United States Consulate General in Lagos has recognised Lagos Fashion Week founder, Omoyemi Akerele, for her contributions to the fashion industry and efforts to connect Nigerian designers with American consumers. The recognition took place at a special lunch held during Lagos Fashion Week 2026.

The event, hosted by The United States Consul General Brandon Hudspeth, brought together designers, entrepreneurs and creative industry leaders to celebrate the role of fashion in strengthening business relations between Nigeria and the United States. American-born actress and producer Osas Ighodaro also attended, while guests experienced a fashion-themed game developed by Lagos-based Maliyo Games.

Since establishing Lagos Fashion Week in 2011, Akerele has developed the event into one of Africaโs leading fashion showcases. The platform has also helped Nigerian designers explore opportunities in the American market through trade events, retail partnerships and international fashion collaborations.
