Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Wednesday, 28th October, 2026.

1. Tinubu Approves ₦70,000 Monthly Transport Allowance

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has approved a monthly transport allowance of ₦70,000 for public service workers for six months, beginning in November 2026.

The decision is aimed at easing the impact of rising living costs on workers. The Federal Government also approved outstanding peculiar allowance payments, to be paid in three instalments starting in November.

The approvals followed a meeting between government representatives and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leaders in Abuja, with the resolutions documented in a memorandum of understanding.

2. Tinubu Seeks Senate Approval for $20.5bn Foreign Loans

President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve a fresh external borrowing plan worth approximately $20.52 billion and €1.045 billion to fund projects across Nigeria in 2026 and 2027.

The request was presented to the Senate by President Godswill Akpabio, with the proposed loans expected to support infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, education, security and job creation.

Tinubu argued that additional foreign financing is necessary to address Nigeria’s infrastructure deficit, with much of the funding expected to go towards power, transportation and healthcare projects.

3. INEC Responds to AI Photos in Voters’ Register

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified that the preliminary voters’ register containing suspected AI-generated photographs is not the final register for the 2027 general elections.

INEC said questionable registration records had been identified during the physical display of the register and would be reviewed as part of its ongoing clean-up exercise.

The commission assured Nigerians that suspicious photographs and possible procedural lapses would be addressed based on verified findings before the final register is released.

4. Police Arrest Man Over Viral Video Allegedly Inciting Religious Violence

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested 22-year-old Umar Ibrahim Gandi Maradun over a viral video allegedly containing remarks capable of inciting religious violence.

According to police spokesperson CSP Ani Iniedu, the suspect was identified after the Zamfara State Command launched an investigation into the footage, which reportedly showed a man wearing the uniform of JIBWIS.

Police said the organisation’s leadership had distanced itself from the alleged conduct and handed the suspect over to authorities. Investigations are ongoing.

5. Wike Unveils Rainbow Coalition Candidates in Rivers

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike has unveiled the Rainbow Coalition’s candidates for the 2027 elections in Rivers State.

The candidates were presented at a political gathering held at Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt. The coalition’s list reportedly includes Ogundu Kingsley Chinda of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as its governorship candidate, with Major Jack as his running mate.

The coalition has previously declared its support for President Bola Tinubu and his re-election bid in 2027.

6. FG Panel Blames Overcrowding for Deaths of 33 Suspects in NSCDC Custody

A Federal Government panel has concluded that 33 suspected illegal miners died from suffocation in an overcrowded detention cell at a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) facility in Minna, Niger State.

The committee, led by Jonathan Kure, said medical and forensic evidence ruled out a disease outbreak, attributing the deaths to environmental asphyxia caused by overcrowding, poor ventilation, heat and dehydration.

The panel also held NSCDC officials responsible for failing to provide adequate care for the detainees. Its findings were presented to Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo in Abuja.

7. Toluwanisings’ Wife Breaks Down in Tears at Memorial

Akanbi Elizabeth, wife of late gospel singer Toluwanisings, broke down in tears while paying tribute to her husband at a memorial event in Ibadan, Oyo State.

During her emotional speech, she struggled to finish her tribute before saying she would forever miss him and asking him not to forget her and their children. Several gospel artistes, including Adeyinka Alaseyori, Esther Igbekele and Bidemi Olaoba, attended the event.

Toluwanisings, whose real name was Olayemi Bayonile Bolaji, died on October 14, 2026, after reportedly slumping. His death has sparked calls for an investigation and disagreements within his family over his burial arrangements.

8. 2Baba Says He Has Stopped Impregnating Women

Nigerian music star Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has jokingly declared that he has stopped impregnating women.

The singer made the remark during a live performance at Rehab Lounge in Calgary, Canada, while interacting with the audience during his hit song True Love.

He asked the crowd where his true love was before making the comment about no longer getting women pregnant.

9. Michael Carrick to Remain Man United Manager for Chelsea Clash

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick is reportedly set to remain in charge for the club’s Premier League match against Chelsea despite growing pressure over the team’s poor results.

According to the report, United’s hierarchy has decided to give Carrick another opportunity to improve the team’s performance following an eight-match winless run in all competitions and a 3–0 defeat to Bournemouth.

The club has reportedly considered other managerial options, including Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann. Carrick previously guided United to third place in the Premier League and Champions League qualification after taking charge in January.

10. Kun Khalifat Appoints Nwabuwah as Warri Wolves Plan NPFL Appeal

Kun Khalifat FC has appointed Emmanuel Ifeanyi Nwabuwah as the club’s coordinator for the 2026/2027 football season.

Meanwhile, Warri Wolves have announced plans to appeal sanctions imposed by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following an attack on a match official after their goalless draw against Kano Pillars.

The league fined Warri Wolves ₦4.2 million, deducted three points and three goals, and ordered the club to play its next five home matches behind closed doors. The club says it will seek leniency, citing efforts to identify and apprehend the suspect involved.
