The Nigerian Senate has disputed FCT Senator Ireti Kingibe’s claim that Nigerians could be required to pay 25 per cent of their earnings in tax if the All Progressives Congress (APC) returns to power in 2027. Senate spokesman Yemi Adaramodu described the allegation as misleading, insisting that the tax legislation had already been passed by the National Assembly and signed into law by President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking in an interview with Sunday Punch, Adaramodu argued that the enacted legislation should be the basis for discussions about the tax system. He accused Kingibe of misrepresenting the law for political reasons and said lawmakers with concerns should raise them through formal procedures in the Senate rather than make political statements.

Kingibe, who is seeking re-election under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), had warned residents of the Federal Capital Territory against voting for the APC. In a widely circulated video, she alleged that a 25 per cent tax on earnings had been approved but was yet to be implemented because of concerns about public reaction ahead of the 2027 elections.
