The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved a 90-day economic action plan aimed at reducing the cost of living, improving food affordability and attracting investments across Nigeria. The decision followed the council’s 161st meeting on Thursday, chaired virtually by Vice President Kashim Shettima, with Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele presenting the plan.
The initiative focuses on food affordability, tax harmonisation, completing major projects, removing barriers to investment and providing regulated household support. NEC also approved a national dashboard to monitor projects and improve transparency in the use of public funds. The government has also set targets of reducing inflation and interest rates to single digits by 2027.
The council further agreed to establish a joint financing framework for deploying compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles to improve affordable transportation. Other discussions covered Ebola preparedness, polio eradication and livestock development, with Shettima urging federal and state governments to work together to ensure economic reforms deliver practical benefits to Nigerians.
