Osun-Osogbo Festival Faces Pollution Threat

The Osun-Osogbo Festival is an annual Yoruba cultural and religious celebration held in Osogbo, Osun State, in honour of Osun, a deity associated with fertility and the river. The festival centres on the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, a historic site recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2005 for its cultural and spiritual significance.

The festival features traditional ceremonies, including Iwopopo, the town-cleansing ritual, the lighting of the sacred sixteen-point lamp and the Iboriade royal-crown ceremony. A major highlight is the procession led by the Arugba, a young woman who carries a ritual offering to the sacred grove. These practices preserve Yoruba beliefs and bring together worshippers, residents and visitors every year.

However, concerns about pollution in the Osogbo River have raised questions about protecting the sacred site and its surrounding environment. A report published by The Guardian on September 3, 2026, highlighted concerns about river contamination linked to gold-mining activities upstream. Protecting the river remains important to safeguard
