Kimi Antonelli has made history by becoming the youngest Formula One world champion after finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday, November 1. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver secured his maiden title with his 16th podium finish of the season, becoming Italy’s first champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
Kimi Antonelli achieved the historic feat at 20 years and 68 days, breaking Sebastian Vettel’s previous record by more than three years. He finished behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who claimed victory, and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton in a race interrupted by two safety cars and a red flag following Valtteri Bottas’ heavy crash.
After crossing the finish line, an emotional Antonelli thanked his Mercedes team over the radio, saying, “Thank you so much, we did it.” Speaking after the race, he described the achievement as a moment he would remember forever, expressing gratitude for the support of his team throughout the season.
