Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has criticised the remand of Nollywood actress Doris Ogala at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre in Lagos. Ogala was arraigned on three counts involving alleged cyberbullying, cyberstalking and attempted extortion of Pastor Chris Okafor, and was remanded pending the hearing of her bail application.
Reacting in a Facebook post, Sowore accused the Nigeria Police Force of using the Cybercrimes Act to target individuals and protect influential people. He questioned the prosecution of Ogala over allegations involving a private relationship and raised concerns about the handling of the case before Justice Akintayo Aluko of the Federal High Court in Lagos.
Sowore said Ogala, whom he identified as the African Action Congress (AAC) governorship candidate in Abia State, should be afforded her constitutional rights, due process and a fair hearing. He called on the police to stop criminalising private disputes and urged the judiciary to remain independent of personal or religious influence.
