Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has backed Kylian Mbappé to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, saying the French forward has been football’s best individual performer over the past year. Speaking to DAZN on October 21, Courtois acknowledged that Real Madrid’s failure to win major trophies could affect Mbappé’s chances of receiving the award.
Courtois praised Mbappé’s individual performances but noted that team success often influences the Ballon d’Or race. He also named Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal as a strong contender, pointing to the teenager’s achievements with his club, including winning the league title.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled for October 26 at the London Palladium in the United Kingdom. French football legend Thierry Henry and British broadcaster Kate Scott are expected to co-host the event, where attention will focus on the leading contenders for one of football’s most prestigious individual awards.
