Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) chieftain Dickson Iroegbu has criticised the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol discount, describing it as a scam. Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Friday, he argued that the government had failed to address major economic challenges affecting Nigerians.
Iroegbu’s comments followed an announcement by Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele about a 30-day discount on petrol sold by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). The NDC chieftain questioned the timing of the initiative and argued that corruption should be tackled to make fuel subsidies more effective, rather than treating subsidy removal as the only solution.
He also disputed the claim that the discount was a Federal Government initiative, saying NNPCL had explained that it was part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary. Iroegbu accused the government of attempting to mislead Nigerians about its economic plans, while maintaining that it had not delivered meaningful improvements in key areas over the past three years.
