The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has acknowledged that the administration’s economic reforms have pushed more Nigerians into poverty. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Bwala said the hardship followed measures including the removal of petrol subsidy and the unification of the foreign exchange market.
Bwala, however, defended the reforms, saying such measures often come with economic discomfort before their intended benefits become visible. He maintained that despite the increase in poverty, the government has made progress since introducing the reforms and pointed to improvements the administration says have been recorded in the economy.
On the 2027 presidential election, Bwala predicted that Tinubu would perform better than he did in 2023 and widen his margin over his opponents. His prediction is a political claim rather than an established outcome, while his confidence was partly linked to the support Tinubu has received from some governors who were elected on opposition platforms.
