Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has condemned the reported abduction of about 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members travelling to their orientation camp. In a statement shared on X on Sunday, Obi described the incident as another indication of what he considers worsening insecurity in Nigeria.
Obi called on security agencies to secure the immediate and safe release of the abducted youths and ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted. He said the incident had increased concerns among families, particularly as young Nigerians preparing to serve their country were reportedly unable to travel safely.
The former Anambra State governor also urged the government to focus more on preventing attacks rather than responding only after they occur. Obi said Nigerians, especially young people, should be able to travel, work and contribute to national development without fear of abduction.
